Navigating uncertain waters with data science

Considered the world’s toughest row, the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge kicked off this Saturday from La Gomera in the Canary Islands and is set to finish in a month’s time and 3000 miles away in Antigua. Arca Blanca is proud to support the On Shoulders of Giants rowing team in this challenge as their data science partner.

More people have climbed Everest than have rowed across the Atlantic. The On Shoulders of Giants (OSOG) rowing team participating in this challenge is formed of four friends from London who all have a passion for endurance sports.

They have been training for nearly two years for this challenge and are raising money for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation which supports sufferers of Motor Neuron Disease and Pursuing Independent Paths which supports adults with learning disabilities.

The team name, inspired by a quote from Sir Isaac Newton, reflects the team’s background in bringing together science and sports to drive performance. They have selected Arca Blanca as their data science partner and we have been working with them to maximise their effectiveness as a team.

Arca Blanca’s data science team have been crunching historic climatology data from the last 20 years and race performance data from the last few years. We have created a set of route options for OSOG that simulated crossing in different weather conditions and will allow OSOG to adapt their strategy in real time as weather conditions change. This will help their team navigate through the uncertain waters of the Atlantic.

We wish Rauri, Mark, Justin and Dan good luck and we will be following their progress this month!

About On Shoulders of Giants

OSOG are Dan, Justin, Rauri and Mark – four friends from London who have a passion for endurance sports. Outside their love of sport, Justin works in strategy consulting, Rauri and Mark are physiotherapists and Dan launched an app that uses AI to coach endurance sportspeople.

About the causes

Pursuing Independent Paths (PiP) supports adults with learning disabilities to achieve their potential focussing on promoting choice, participation and independence.

The My Name’5 Doddie Foundation aims to make a difference to the lives of those coping and battling with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) through funding research into its causes and potential cures.
